I am featuring three of the many amazing books from this year’s MCBD event:

Building Bridges with Bilingual Books and Multicultural Resources:

A Practical Manual of Lesson Plans, Literacy Games, and Fun Activities from Around the World to Celebrate Diversity in the Classroom and at Home

is a new book providing invaluable tools for educators to celebrate diversity in the classroom.  The three themes of the multicultural lesson plans include Cultural Awareness and Diversity; Folktales, Fables, Myths, and Legends and Holidays/Festival.

In the three themes, there are eleven topics and each topic has a recommended bilingual book for educators.  The world cultural exploration starts with books and extends to engaging games and diversity activities.  All lessons meet the Common Core State Standards and the detailed content makes the instruction simple for educators to follow and use in the classroom.

I’ve found the lesson plans versatile and adaptable for any age group and English proficiency level.  The bilingual storybook approach is brilliant for literacy development, cultural engagement, and class community building.

From stories to games, from cultural awareness in the lesson plans to diversity activities, educators will be able to use this book in so many ways and in various grade levels.  Bridging the gap starts with one family and one classroom and you can be the leader to initiate Read Your World program in your neighborhood, in your class, and in your school with the resources in this book.

Mei Ling's Hiccups Read Your World MCBD by Miss Panda Chinese

One of the bilingual books used in Cultural Awareness and Diversity theme is Mei Ling’s Hiccups.  From reading and discussing the story, children will understand and appreciate the cultural differences within the class.  They will discover the different ways to “cure” hiccups from the tips around the world and maybe also from their friends.

Literacy building, art integration, and vocabulary development are all included in the lesson plans for you to use and lead your children to connect their own culture with the world culture.

Language Lizard, LLC is one of the leading children’s multilingual multicultural book resources.  And, most of their books are in dual language format which is available in English with a choice of many other languages.  We hope you head over to language Lizard and check out their fantastic collection.

Queen of Physics: How WU CHIEN SHIUNG Helped Unlock the Secrets of the Atom

is a wonderful book for children to see the possibilities of achieving their dreams, making a change in the world, and being a contributor to the community.

Queen of Physics tells a courageous story about a remarkable Chinese scientist, Wu Chien Shiung who first studied education then focused on the study of science.   Her education started in China and proceeded to the United States.

Wu was a curious young girl in China at a time when few girls had the opportunity to go to school.  Her parents created a school only for girls and opened up an opportunity for the girls to be educated even before Wu was born.

Later, she transformed to be a courageous leader for her peers during the wartime. She was a studious learner and a dedicated and precise researcher.  Her deep understanding and hard work in Physics and her generosity of sharing her work assisted her peer scientists received the Nobel Prize not just once but three times, at the time female scientists were less recognized.

Wu continued to fight prejudice against women and Asians.  She was a remarkable physicist and she was named “The First Lady of Physics Research” and “Queen of Physics!” by the Smithsonian magazine and Newsweek.

This is a fantastic book written by Teresa Robeson with beautiful illustrations.  The story is well-told with great cultural facts and the amazing science work Wu did.  It is a fabulous read for kids of all ages to inspire their curiosity about cultures, social justice, and science.

GLOBAL KIDS: 50+ Games, Crafts, Recipes & More from Around the World (Multilingual Edition)

This set of global education learning cards by Homa Sabet Tavangar and Sophie Fatus is well-researched and beautifully designed for children ages 5 and up.

With this great set of multicultural cards, kids can create, play, celebrate, eat, help out and explore the world with hands-on activities.  Kids will learn about countries, world language, what kids on the other side of the world do and much much more. Eating with chopsticks is one of the activities, too.  Each double-sided card has a topic that leads to a multicultural activity with easy-to-follow directions, drawings, and extensive learning ideas.

I’ve found the Global Kids card set is a great tool to bring intercultural thinking to children and connect them with world culture in an active and interactive way.  From the national flag on each card, kids can find out about a country and locate it on a map and a globe.  For older children, they can share what they know about the country and go further with the theme information provided on the card.

Learning elevates when kids are actively engaged with a great collection of hands-on activities such as Surprise Stacking Dools Matryoshika (Russia), Fabulous Fabric Batik (Indonesia), Flag Ceremony Art, Saying “Thank you” in different languages to just name a few of the activities included in this resource.

Barefoot Books brings Inclusive, Diverse, Sustainable, and Multicultural books to children, parents, educators, and schools.  And, it has been a leader in providing multicultural global education resources to families and educators.  I hope you head over and explore what Barefoot Books have for you to help your children thrive.

Join us on the Multicultural Children’s Book Day on January 31st!  We can work together to make a change in the lives of our children with multicultural books and tools that cultivate their understanding of the world, cultures, people around them and their own heritage.  Embracing diversity connects the world.  See you at Multicultural Children’s Book Day!
