KWC-DOD1

This is our first time in South America celebrating Day of the Dead.  My daughter came home one day and told me that people don’t celebrate Halloween here but they celebrate Dia de los Muertos here in Ecuador.  What is the difference between Halloween and Day of the Dead?  What are the craft projects we can do?  What are the books we can read on this special occasion?  What do people eat during this celebration?  When I need answers to those questions I know the best place to go for multicultural learning resource is at Kid World Citizen!  Becky Morales, founder of Kid World Citizen and co-author of The Global Education Toolkit for Elementary Learners also shares her quality learning materials at TpT.

For the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) Becky created a learning package full of fun activities for children/students to learn about this cultural celebration. Highlights of this learning unit include:

1. Day of the Dead Info Guide.

2. Reading pages in English and Spanish.

3. Book recommendations for this celebration.  Post reading guided discussion questions  and answers.

4. Coloring pages.

5. Craft projects.KWC-DOD3

6. Banners and posters for classroom decoration.

7. Number games and much more.

I found bilingual reading pages are very useful for ELL or Spanish students.  The styrofoam print-making project is a lot of fun.  The Day of the Dead Info Guide gives us a good overall understanding of the celebration.  And the Handwriting Sheets are a good tool for children to draw and practice.  My daughter and I enjoyed going through this unit and working on various activities.  We even found the special bread and drink and tried it.

Kid World Citizen website and its TpT store are great world culture resources.  So head over and check it out what people are celebrating on the other side of the world.
