Writing a short note for your child to read is something special.  Add a short note to your child’s lunch bag and see what it happens.  The more you do it the more fun it is.  Start with a few sentences here, one at a time.

When Chinese is not your native language you might have some concerns but you can start with one word, such as Love ài .

Look at the traditional version of love and the simplified version of love .  Inspect the difference between the two writing forms of Love in Chinese.  The traditional form has heart-xīn- in the character, love āi .  The simplified form has friend-yǒu- in the word, love .  Is that interesting?  This brings up a good discussion question for kids of all ages.

Chinese sentences can be as short as two characters.  So, give it a try and write a note with just a few words. How about this short sentence?  I love you 我愛你 (traditional) wǒ à nǐ 我爱你 (simplified form).

When you learn Chinese with your child together you are showing that you value what your child is learning and you are a team.  The word count doesn’t matter.  What you do matters.  Your note with Chinese words matters to your child.  It is special to your child.

You might be interested in knowing that one of the classic Chinese poem forms has five characters in one sentence and the complete poem only contains four sentences.  This should give you a peek of how one Chinese character can mean something deep and profound in context.  This classic form of poems is called 五言絕句 wǔ yán jué jù 五言绝句.

So if a poet can do that you can start with short sentences in Chinese as well.  Here are the ones to get you to start with.  And, if you need any help with more words and how to say them correctly here are the tools you can use.
