Summer Hike Not Summer Slide

Language acquisition needs consistency. All the early learning in Chinese is vital for young learners because they can advance further smoothly based on their previous knowledge and experiences. You can guide your child to the trail of summer hike with books and activities that cater to their interests, ignite their curiosity, and expand their world.

Language is for communication so if learners can use Chinese and connect it with stories, games, food, activities, and family members… then the Chinese language is more than just a language. Learning Chinese is more than just a task. It becomes meaningful to them. This shift in perception can be a true game-changer especially if you encounter any resistance to the target language (Chinese) from your child.

Summer Reading

This booklist is created for young learners and families that need a bridge or support with English. It is also a great resource for Chinese learners that need a confidence booster.  In this collection, cultural books are in English and the language learning-focused readings are bilingual in English and Chinese.

The benefits of bilingual books and resources are that they serve as a bridge and a connector.

A bilingual book can be easily shared with your child’s friends who are not familiar with Mandarin. However, they will be able to read or understand the story in English. At the same time, your child and her friends can talk about a story or do a hands-on activity together. Your child can even share what she knows about Chinese and Chinese culture with a friend or more.

Daily Listening

This playlist is for your to use each day. Click and enjoy each topic or story. Show enthusiasm for each track and topic. I call it the learning partner’s “Show and Tell”. Parents are the guide. Your passion shows and it is contagious. What you (parent) SHOW they (your child) can TELL Smile, laugh, and ask questions about a phrase or a sentence you hear. Sing along with the songs. Dance and make movement!

Consistency is king as always for all learning – make reading and listening a part of your daily routine, but also allow flexibility based on your child’s interests. Celebrate their achievements, whether they’re finishing a book, a track, an episode, understanding a new sentence, or learning a new word. Each step they take on this journey is an achivement to cheer for!
