Create a routine is to have the target language present in your child’s everyday life. It is a lifestyle and it is a part of your family activity. The best place to start is to anchor the target language with an existing routine. You can listen to a target language program during the commute with the kids. So it will look like this: go the car – buckle up – listen to Chinese songs/podcast/stories. Pick the program that fits the proficiency level of your child so she does not tune out.
Create a Routine
Consistency is the king in language learning. Have fun with the second language every day, and your child will feel safe engaging. Learning a new language together with your child is also a great bonding experience. Make the second language a part of your daily routine. How about listening to a target language song playlist or a podcast during a car ride?
-
Mandarin Chinese – playlist, Playful Chinese podcast
-
Spanish – playlist, podcast
-
Multilingual songs – playlist
Your family’s target language routine does not limit to one. You can have 2 parts. One in the morning and one in the evening. Pick the format that fits your schedule. You will need to feel relaxed so your child can feel positive about the new routine. Short and sweet can be powerful. And, you need to consider the age of your child. An older child has a longer attention span and a young child has a short one.
What is one routine that you can anchor your target language with right away? Try it out. Have fun!
