Reading Activities for babies, tots, and big kids!

  • Songs and Movement: Young children love listening to your voice.  Sing songs to your little ones.  Sing-along with a song to your babies or toddlers.  Movement and fingerplay that go with a song take the target language learning experience to a different entertaining level.

  • Nursery Rhymes: Repetition and rhyming are vocabulary and language building.  Nursery rhymes is soothing for young children.  There are patterns in rhymes.  When children are listening they retain the repeated words and pattern in the language.

  • Touch, Feel and Take a Look: Learning is active.  Touch and find out what it is.  Feel and see what it is like.  Take a Look at the Chinese characters on the wall/table/poster.  Providing opportunities for children to connect spoken language with the written language is building literacy skill.

  • Picture Chat: Use family picture album to have a conversation in Chinese with your children.  You can use limited vocabulary to do this and you can switch from one family member to the others.  You can also use pictures of animals or pictures from magazines to do this.

  • Board Books: These books have vibrant color pictures and you can point to the pictures and show your little ones the images and talk about the objects on every page.

  • Books, Books, Books: Familiar stories in English for kids can be a hit in Chinese reading session.  A good one to start is Good Night Moon (Chinese edition).  You can search children’s books title in English and add “Chinese edition”  on Amazon.  You can check out this Chinese books for children book list by age groups with book recommendation for middle school and high school students from fellow CI teachers .

  • Sequencing stories: After reading a story for a few times ask your children what happened in the story with a few pictures from the book.  You can print from the book or you can make your own.  Book activities like a puzzle or using figurines to retell a story are engaging for kids.

  • Word Wall: Set up a word wall and display a collection of Chinese characters/phrases on a wall at home or in class.  Word wall is a visual aide.  This is an interactive tool for children to refer to when they have a conversation with you.  Word wall can also play a role of reference or anchor chart when children are reading and writing.

  • Arts & Crafts: Hands-on activities are fun and engaging for kids of all ages.  Use craft supplies you already have to create art projects.  Check out this craft project with black sesame seeds.

  • Outdoor Activities: Play is learning.  Summer activities have endless possibilities from going to the park, visiting the zoo, taking a walk to backyard water play.  Get the kids moving and doing things is a fantastic way to add target language to  everyday life.
