Multicultural Children’s Book Day is arriving on January 25, 2024! This is the 11th year of this wonderful annual celebration for diverse children’s books and its important mission. Miss Panda Chinese continues to be a co-host and a book reviewer this time to support its mission and the important work this non-profit organization does.
On A Mission
Read Your World is a non-profit whose mission is to raise awareness about children’s books that celebrate diversity and to get more of these books into the hands of readers. With the alarming increase in children’s books being challenged and banned, it is more important than ever to give kids access to diverse stories. They do this by donating books to reviewers and classroom libraries. Read Your World also provides book lists and classroom kits to help parents, guardians, teachers, librarians, and readers find the diverse children’s books that they need. In addition, they also spotlight children’s book authors, creators, and publishers with their weekly IG Live Interview series.
Behind the Scene
Valarie Budayr from Audrey Press Books and Mia Wenjen from Pragmatic Mom were the pushing hands behind this literacy and diversity initiative. After being frustrated by a lack of diverse and multicultural children’s books available to their own families these two teamed up and kicked off a much-needed national event in 2012, the first-ever Multicultural Children’s Book Day! Multicultural Children’s Book Day is celebrated on the last Thursday of January each year. The upcoming one is on January 25, 2024.
