A Gift for Amma Book Review Multicultural Children’s Book Day
I am thrilled to review one outstanding multicultural book featured in Multicultural Children’s Book Day this year. If you and your child enjoy farmer markets on a sunny day you will fall in love with this picture book that takes you on an adventure in a market in India. let’s go!
A Gift for Amma – Market Day in India by Meera Sriram is a beautiful multicultural children’s book with gorgeous and vibrant illustrations by Mariona Cabassa.
This is a charming story for kids to explore a southern Indian street market from fragrant spices, blooming flowers, to precious peacock feathers. A trip to find a gift of Amma becomes a thoughtful adventure for the young girl. The vibrant spice, the blooming jasmine, and the vibrant color words with the illustration all make this a perfect picture book to experience a part of India from one page to the next.
A Gift for Amma is a heartwarming read. What is the best gift for Amma? This story will inspire curiosity for the kids. Why is the girl buying a gift for Amma? Is this a special day? What is saffron for? What’s the final pick and why?
It’s a playful read with many questions you can ask your child. The love and care for Amma shine through the book. The power of colors adds up from the first page to the last. The flow of the words engages the readers to enjoy the adventure with the author.
A Gift for Amma will delight the readers and inspire them to explore more about the Indian culture and the world market close and far from their own neighborhood. The photos taken by the author at the end add a personal touch to the book.
Will you meet the real Amma in the book? It is a secret for the readers to find out. This book will bring out many meaningful discussion questions at home or in class. Kids will have fun sharing their own experience in the market and find out the similarities and differences of the market they know and the one in the book.
I also enjoy the word list and the cultural notes. They are resourceful and make A Gift for Amma Market Day in India a great book for literacy building for young readers.
